Last year Bulletproof held their first ever Inspirational Festival – a month of talks from various creative talent ranging from fashion designers, through to some of the best illustrators in the business. Inspired by what I saw, I decided to explore the world of calligraphy and lettering; it seemed only natural since I’ve always been fascinated by letterforms and how powerful they are.
Determined to go back to where it all started for me (paper and ink), I enrolled myself on a Citylit course, ‘Lettering with Illustration’ taught by Sharon Shaw. I have to say I found it quite intimidating initially. The idea of not having a ‘command-Z’ button to rely on can be really daunting! However, within a couple of hours I was absolutely loving it and starting to realise that all those small imperfections I was so concerned about, were actually responsible for making this kind of work so human and full of character.
It became quite clear that practice is vital here, so hopefully this is only going to be the start of my ‘lettering journey’. Here is some of my early work…
