Raising a glass or two in Barcelona…
Back in May, we submitted two of our favourite Bulletproof packaging projects of the year for the chance to win a prestigious Pentaward, these being PizzaExpress At Home range and Cidrerie Stassen. Now in it’s eleventh year, the Pentawards ceremony is hosted in design capitals all around the globe and this year we were lucky enough to be invited to the W Hotel in Barcelona. The awards’ primary mission is to increase the stature of packaging design and those who create, it so we were elated to be on their shortlist.
It was a bright and early start on Saturday as the dream team assembled at Gatwick airport. Representing PizzaExpress were Natasha and Mark who both worked on the ‘At Home’ project and representing Cidrerie Stassen were Jo and Vini. Just a short flight before arriving in the glorious sunshine and our taxi drove us along the port of the city stretching along the pretty coast filled with holiday makers with the W Hotel in sight across the bay where the event would later take place.
Our accommodation was right in the Gothic Quarter, just a stones throw from the famous Las Ramblas street dotted with market stalls and full of hustle and bustle. A quick change of clothes and out to explore the winding streets! Inevitably we ended up taking a pit-stop to enjoy the gorgeous surroundings and indulge in some local delicacies of the city in one of the many pretty squares.
With just enough time to throw on our glad rags, we then made our way to the venue. We pulled up at the majestic W Hotel and arrived just in time as the Pentawards ceremony kicked off and our hosts for the evening began taking us through all the prizes for each category.
Starting with the food and drink categories, it was only a short wait before we were invited on stage to receive our first award of the night -bronze for our PizzaExpress At Home work! We proudly went to collect our trophy which was handed to us by the founders Jean Jacques Evrard and Brigitte Evrard.
Many agencies had travelled from all the way across the world as far as Australia, China and Japan to accept their awards and there was an opportunity for everyone to mingle amongst all the guests on the hotel terrace in an intermission break.
As we made our way through each of the many food and drink categories from dairy to soups, spices and oils, we eventually got into beverages. We waited to hear our category being announced and then our beautiful packaging for Cidrerie Stassen flashed up on screen, showing that we’d won a silver award. As we proudly went to collect our second trophy of the night, we got an extra loud cheer from our Heineken clients who were in the audience too!
Heineken went on to win Brand of the Year and got a massive round of applause as the whole team took to the stage to collect their award. Wearing Heineken branded tuxedo, their Global Head of Design was certainly impressively dressed for the occasion!
It was an absolute honour to win not one, but two Pentawards. When the ceremony was wrapped up, it was onto the terrace to continue our celebrations well into the night. With the sun setting and the bright lights of Barcelona in the background, the view was absolutely perfect to raise a glass and celebrate with the team. Champagne and canapés were served and the timing couldn’t have been better as fireworks could be seen from the other side of the bay. A perfect end to a perfect evening.
At the end of the night, we headed to the top floor of the hotel for cocktails. Luckily, the trophies made their way back with us when we left the bar!
We hear that next year the ceremony will take place in Bulletproof’s second home of New York City so we’re excited to apply next year we will be compiling our shortlist of entries for Pentwards 2018! If you want to see who the full list of winners, they are all now live on the Pentawards website.
