Over the last couple of weeks, our very own Alex Melton has been giving Bulletproofers a chance to try out modern calligraphy.
Here’s what Alex has to say about the craft:
“Modern calligraphy has become a really popular hobby in the last few years. I started to teach myself through bits of online research and many hours of practising to work out how to get the best results from different nibs and inks. I love writing and lettering, so I find calligraphy really therapeutic.”
After being introduced to different calligraphy styles and equipment, we were given our very own Nikko G nib, a Speedball Penholder and a jar of Higgins Eternal ink to get started! We began by learning general technique; how to do thicker and thinner strokes and making sure we were holding and pressing down the pen correctly.
Once we had that mastered, we moved on to letters of the alphabet – it sounds easier than it is! A few eyebrows were raised over some of the letters not quite looking how we might expect, but luckily with modern calligraphy there are plenty of different options to try out.
Here are some of Alex’s top tips:
“It’s taken me a while to get to a point a which I’m happy with my own style, so if you decide to give calligraphy a go, my top tips are: Don’t compare your work too closely with that of someone who’s been doing this for a long time, comparison is the thief of joy. And, don’t assume that if you have messy handwriting you’ll be terrible at calligraphy, these two things don’t go hand in hand, but you do need some patience.”
We ended the evening by attempting to write full words and put our new calligraphy skills to the test…
Our handwriting never looked so good!
